No Pain

Project 4: No Pain 12 April 2007

Ouchhhh!!!

My dad makes some noise when the needle is poked into the vein on his arm. A nurse is preparing him for his kidney dialysis. I watch by his side and feel the great pain in my heart!

What enormous courage my dad has, to face and accept the pain, again and again – three times a week!

Ladies & Gentlemen, are you afraid of pain, do you avoid pain?

A friend suffering from cancer told me, he is not afraid of death but, he is afraid of pain!

A woman stung by a bee got into my uncle’s taxi. She was wailing hysterically {ouch..pain..quick quick}, so much so that my uncle panicked and suffered a heart attack on their way to the hospital.

Despite advances in medicine, pain remains part of the human life.

Pain treats all men equally. The young, the old, the rich, the poor – they all suffer pain. Even the great and the humble are not spared either.

Recently I fell and hurt my tailbones while hiking. The pain kept me up the whole night as I moaned and moaned in pain. I spent next 3 days moaning more in bed as I couldn’t sit, stand or walk.

Pain reminds us how vulnerable we human beings are.

I certainly do not wish I had fell and hurt myself, and I surely do not wish anyone of you here, suffer pain of any kind.

But when pain knocks on our door, do we ask WHY “why me? Why this has to happen? ”

Do not ask WHY, but ask…… HOW.
“How am I going to deal with this?”

No pain, No gain

A wise man told me “a person who knows HOW to suffer pain, becomes purified, even tempered, and a thousand times more compassionate”

Wow, that’s a tall order! How could anyone be even-tempered when pain is a demanding customer?

In weeks after my fall, pain did not leave me alone.

Every step I take, pain follows me.

My quick 10minute walk to office becomes a 30min struggle.

I am still learning, learning to understand how pain could make me a more compassionate person!

But I notice something – pain made people around me more compassionate, more understanding. Friends and colleagues offered all sorts of help and words of comfort.

I ask my dad how he manages the pain. He said “I suffer only 3 times a week but hoho…I am better than your Uncle who has stroke, he has his walking stick with him all the times. This pain is nothing when I know all of you are with me.”

If we could focus on the positive rather than the pain itself
If we could see pain as a golden chance to make us a better person

Maybe…..we would fear less…..moan less…. and… slowly accept pain gracefully.

The late Pope John Paul II suffered tremendously from his failing health. But this has not stopped him from doing God’s work. He showed us an example of how pain is very much a part of life. For life without pain isn’t life at all.

Just as a woman suffers pain when she gives birth to her baby,
pain delivers us unto a meaningful life.

Do not ask Why, Ask….. How.

Focus on the …..positive.

Let’s embrace life and be willing to welcome Pain,

Remember ……No pain, no gain.
